How to Give an Effective Flight Review

Introduction to Flight Review
Overview of the purpose and structure of an effective flight review per FAR 61.56.
Requirements for Flight Review (FAR 61.56)
Frequency: Required every 24 calendar months.
Exemptions: Certain cases exempt pilots from a review, such as passing a practical test, completing a phase of the FAA Wings program, or holding a current solo endorsement as a student pilot.
Minimum Requirements:
1 hour of ground instruction on general operating rules.
1 hour of flight instruction covering maneuvers and safe operation.

Setting Expectations for Flight Review
Pre-Flight Expectations: Agree on review objectives and explain the review process.
Defining Outcomes: Discuss goals for the flight review and outline next steps if goals cannot be met in one session.
Flight Review Specifics and Authorizations
Solo Authorization: FAR 61.31(d)(2) requirements for solo flight endorsements.
Category/Class: Review in an aircraft that matches the pilot’s certificate category/class.
Medical and Recency Requirements: A flight review does not require a medical certificate, BasicMed, or recent flight experience as long as the pilot is rated and the sole manipulator of controls.
Logging and PIC Status
FAR 61.51(e): Pilots without a medical certificate or recent experience may log PIC time if they are rated in the aircraft and are the sole manipulator.
