FAA WINGS Program | How Pilots and CFIs Can Use It to Stay Current, Save Time, and Renew Certificates

Outline:

  1. What is the WINGS Program?

    • A free, lifelong FAA proficiency program for GA pilots.

    • Completion of a WINGS Phase substitutes for a Flight Review under 14 CFR 61.56(e).

    • Reinforces safety and reduces accident risk.

  2. Benefits for Pilots

    • Covers real-world causes of GA accidents.

    • Accessible online via faasafety.gov.

    • Allows tracking, validation, and participation history.

    • May qualify pilots for insurance discounts.

    • Provides on-demand webinars, in-person events, and scenario-based learning.

  3. WINGS Structure

    • Three Levels:

      • Basic, Advanced, Master

    • Infinite Phases per level

    • Each phase includes:

      • 2–3 Knowledge Credits (courses, webinars, or seminars)

      • 3 Flight Credits (in-aircraft or sim)

  4. Credit Validity & Completion

    • Credits valid for 12 calendar months.

    • Phases must be completed before earliest credit expires.

    • Completion of any Phase renews your Flight Review.

    • Endorsement A.66 can be issued and logged.

  5. Why CFIs Should Care

    • Validating 15 WINGS flight activities on 5 different pilots within 24 months:

      • Qualifies for CFI renewal via WINGS.

    • Demonstrates professionalism and ongoing involvement.

    • Great for building long-term client trust and FAA rapport.

    • Use the instructor portal on faasafety.gov for easier management.

  6. WINGS Credit Packages (Efficient Use)

    • Pre-approved sets of flight + knowledge credits that form a complete Phase.

    • Credit Packages include:

      • Private Pilot (A071102-02)

      • Instrument Rating (A070502-03)

      • Commercial (A071102-01)

      • CFI Renewal/Reinstatement (A071024-01)

      • ATP or Type Rating (A071102-05)

      • Flight Review (A1030628-01)

      • IPC (A080103-01)

    • Great for flight schools and training centers.

    • Speeds up the validation process with one-step approvals.

  7. How to Validate WINGS Credits

    • Log in to faasafety.gov.

    • Student requests validation.

    • CFI logs in, verifies logbook/certificates, approves.

    • Completion appears under "My WINGS" dashboard.

    • Tip: Use the “Cheat Sheet” for fast lookup of Activity Numbers.

  8. Tools and Best Practices

    • Use ezwings.net for easier navigation.

    • Keep the “Common Activities” card in your CFI logbook or wallet.

    • After IPC/Flight Review, complete FAA Form 8710-1 in IACRA.

    • Encourage students to track progress digitally and consistently.
